Tessa Hills, a Wellington DJ known as Messie, has been chosen by Fred Again to join the Australia leg of his global tour.
“There’s no words, I’m completely overwhelmed,” Hills said.
The 21-year-old will be travelling to Australia with the international DJ for an upcoming gig, with all travel costs covered by the artist.
“It’s pretty crazy, it’s unreal,” she said.
She was chosen to perform after Fred Again put up an Instagram post, encouraging New Zealand DJs to submit their work to a Google document.
“It has been full on the past few days,” she said.
“He’s asked me to come and play at the last show on his tour, it’s going to be about 35,000 people,” Hills said.
It’ll be her second time playing with Fred Again, after their first gig together at the Coroglen Tavern on the Coromandel Peninsula.
“He was like how are you feeling, and I was like I’m a bit nervous.
“As soon as my set was done, he gave me a big hug, and was like this is for sure not the last time you’ll be playing with me,” she said.
Hills has been a DJ for two years, she studied music and also plays the drums.
She is also a mentor in a group called Surely Skate, a New Zealand skateboarding community where young girls learn about the sport together.
