A worker who died after a retaining wall collapsed at a construction site in Brisbane has been named as a New Zealand father.

Kimura Dixon, 45, was killed and the 19-year-old son of his partner became trapped after the wall toppled on Tuesday morning while the pair were digging a shallow trench in Brisbane’s West End.

The younger man was pulled from the rubble more than 90 minutes later before being taken to hospital with serious leg injuries.

“Six of those workers removed concrete from the injured man, and in doing so probably saved his life,” Queensland Police Inspector Chris Pemberton said.

He said the incident was a “tragic thing to have happened so close to Christmas”.

An online fundraiser was set up by Dixon’s loved ones to bring his body home to New Zealand.

“On Tuesday 2nd December there was a tragic accident that claimed the life of Katarina’s partner Kim. Her son was also injured but is okay,” it read.

“While we all are processing this devastating news, I ask if use can please make a small donation to be able to fly Kim home to New Zealand so he can be laid to rest.

“Kim was loved by so many and will be greatly missed. I ask that use all keep Kat, his family and friends in your thoughts.”

Dixon’s death came one day after the death of a 15-year-old boy after he was struck by a falling object from a concrete pump truck on a construction site in Surfers Paradise.
