Additional police officers are being deployed throughout Hawke’s Bay following two serious gang-related incidents overnight.
Around 9.30pm last night, police were called to a report of a serious assault on Riverbend Rd in Onekawa.
“Reports indicated that a firearm was discharged, and two people were taken to hospital with moderate injuries,” Inspector Caroline Martin said.
It was followed by a second incident around 2.20am, when police were called after two youths sustained “life-threatening injuries” in a grievous assault on Omahu Rd in Hastings.
The pair were taken to hospital.
Omahu Rd was closed for a scene examination but has since reopened.
“We’re urging people to stop this needless violence before anyone else gets hurt,” Martin said.
Residents can expect to see an increased presence in the area while police carry out inquiries into the incidents.
“We will not stand for any behaviour that results in harm to members of our community,” she said.
“I want to assure the public that we are allocating additional resources.
“I urge anyone with information to please contact us – even small details might help us.”
Anyone with information has been asked to make a report online, call 105, or make an anonymous report through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
