Lotto jackpot soars to m after Powerball rolls over

Powerball has rolled over to a staggering $40 million jackpot after no one struck the winning numbers in last night’s Lotto draw, making it the highest jackpot in more than a year.

Lotto NZ confirmed no tickets matched all six winning numbers and the Powerball in Wednesday’s draw.

Head of corporate communications Will Hine said the draw on Saturday would be the highest prize since August last year when an Auckland family scored $44.67m.

“[It’s] the biggest ever Powerball prize won on a single ticket.”

The largest overall Lotto win stood at $50 million, which was shared by two players in 2020.

Hine said the soaring jackpot would likely spark excitement across the country.

“We know New Zealanders all around the country will be dreaming about what they would do if they won $40 million this weekend.”

He encouraged players to keep things in perspective.

“Big jackpots still have small odds, and one ticket is enough to be in the draw.”

The winning numbers from Wednesday’s draw were 03, 04, 09, 25, 29, and 40. The bonus ball was 20, and the Powerball was 03.

While Powerball remained unstruck, four players from Hamilton, Carterton, Lower Hutt and Invercargill will be celebrating after they each won $250,000 with Lotto First Division.

The winning tickets were sold at Gordonton Superette in Hamilton, New World Hutt City in Lower Hutt, Collingwood Foodcentre in Invercargill and on MyLotto to a player from Carterton.

Strike Four was won by a player from Auckland who takes home $200,000. The ticket was sold at Pacific Superette in Auckland.

The next Powerball draw takes place live on TVNZ 1 and TVNZ+ at 8pm on Saturday night.

The morning’s headlines in 90 seconds, including new speed cameras rolling out, fireworks start fires around the country, and Bluey’s new Christmas project. (Source: 1News)
