Man allegedly attacked kebab store worker who gave him a free meal

Police have arrested a man who allegedly assaulted an Auckland kebab shop worker – despite being given a free meal.

The man went into the eatery on Henderson’s Rathgar Rd at around 9.45pm on October 26, police said.

He proceeded to intimidate a person working there, who offered him a free kebab in an attempt to keep the peace.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Bunting said the man took the kebab, walked around the counter and assaulted the employee. He said the victim was then forced to hand over all of the money from the cash register before being assaulted again.

Bunting said investigators viewed CCTV footage and were able to identify who they believed carried out the attack.

Officers subsequently arrested a 30-year-old man at a Henderson address earlier this week.

He was charged with robbery by assault and remanded in custody. He was due to reappear in the Waitākere District Court on December 4.

“This type of unnecessary violence puts people at serious risk of harm and we are focused on finding those involved and holding them to account,” Bunting said.
