A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a series of arson attacks that struck cellphone towers across Otago – including one completely destroyed mobile site in central Wānaka.
In July, a rural cellular tower in the Lindis Pass was “significantly damaged”. Earlier this month, “suspicious” fires hit cell tower sites in Wānaka.
Two cell towers operated by One NZ were attacked, with one mobile site in downtown Wānaka “completely destroyed”. The telco provider said the tower would take at least four weeks to be fixed.
A Spark NZ tower was also subjected to an “unsuccessful” arson attempt.
Detective Senior Sergeant Regan Boucher earlier said the attacks on cellular infrastructure could disrupt vital connectivity, including access to emergency services such as 111.
“The last thing we want, and I would also hope the persons responsible want, is for someone to be hurt because they couldn’t call for help.”
A 41-year-old man was arrested this morning and was due to appear in the Queenstown District Court today facing charges of arson and firearms offences.
Acting Detective Sergeant Julie Bowman said the arsons were not only frustrating for police but posed a serious risk to the community.
“The team have worked tirelessly investigating, and we are thankful that no one was hurt as a result of the actions of this individual.”
Bowman said the arrest was a good result for the community. “They should feel confident we will always work to hold those to account to carry out such mindless attacks.”
