Man charged with murdering Lyn Fleming has case moved to Christchurch

The man accused of killing Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming in Nelson at the start of this year has had his case moved to Christchurch.

Hayden Tasker appeared at the High Court in Wellington by video link from jail today.

Justice Dale La Hood said the 32-year-old’s case would be moved to Christchurch.

Tasker previously pleaded not guilty to six charges, including murder and attempted murder. A provisional trial date has been set for May of next year.

Fleming and her colleague, Senior Sergeant Adam Ramsay, were struck by a vehicle in the early hours of New Year’s Day while on foot patrol.

After the officers were hit, the vehicle turned around and rammed a police car, concussing another police officer and injuring two members of the public.

Ramsay was critically injured but recovered from his injuries.

Fleming later died in hospital.

At the time of her death, Police Commissioner Richard Chambers said Fleming was a “well-known and highly respected” member of the Nelson community and the police since joining in 1992.

“She was a beautiful soul, she was an outstanding police officer, and even I had the privilege of working alongside Lyn between 2012 and 2014,” he said.

Fleming was the 34th officer to die in the line of duty in New Zealand. She is also the first female officer and only officer from the Nelson region to be killed.
