Man due in court after police officer shot in leg with air rifle

The 47-year-old man allegedly at the centre of a more than three hour standoff with police yesterday in Auckland’s Flat Bush has been formally charged.

Yesterday, the man allegedly shot a firearm at police just after 9.30am while officers were conducting inquiries at a property on Chapel Road.

One officer was injured and taken to hospital with minor injuries, and was discharged a few hours later.

Superintendent Shanan Gray said the man refused to exit the property at a Salvation Army housing complex despite multiple attempts to engage with him.

Nearby residents were then evacuated, schools were sent into lockdown, and some flights into Auckland Airport were interrupted for a short time while a police Eagle helicopter flew overhead.

After more than three hours, it was decided the armed offenders squad would enter the property and arrest the man. He was taken into custody a short time later.

An air rifle was located during a search of the property.

Injured cop in ‘good spirits’

Gray said the injured police officer was “in good spirits” and being provided support.

“This could have had a very different outcome, and we’re incredibly thankful she only suffered a minor injury.

“Our staff often face dangerous situations and I’m thankful to all those who brought the matter to a swift resolution.”

She is recovering at home.

Police said the 47-year-old man was charged with using a firearm against a law enforcement officer, injures with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two counts of breaching electronically monitored bail.

He is set to appear in Manukau District Court today.
