A man has been taken into custody after a gun was allegedly fired at police in Auckland’s Flat Bush this morning.

The incident occurred just after 9.30am on Chapel Road, where police said it was conducting inquiries.

One officer was hurt in the incident. Superintendent Shanan Gray has since confirmed they had been discharged from hospital. Police said earlier their injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

Gray said cordons remained in place on Chapel Road as of 1.30pm between Baverstock Road and Stancombe Road while inquiries continued.

Shortly after 1pm, loud bangs could be heard from the area. Minutes later, footage taken by 1News showed police taking a person into custody.

Some of those near the cordon experienced discomfort from what appeared to be a chemical used in the operation.

Police negotiators, armed police, an ambulance and a fire truck were spotted at the scene during the standoff.

Earlier in the day, a Salvation Army complex was evacuated, and schools in the surrounding area were put into lockdown.

Baverstock Oaks School, Sancta Maria Catholic Primary School, and Sancta Maria College later confirmed online that the lockdowns had been lifted.

In a statement, The Salvation Army said it was aware of the incident but was unable to provide further comment until it had a clearer understanding.

Flights into Auckland Airport were also impacted for a short time, with a police Eagle helicopter being spotted overhead. Two domestic flights were diverted to Hamilton, while 20 others were held on the ground or in the air.

Flat Bush lies within the approach path for incoming aircraft to Auckland Airport. Airways NZ confirmed the helicopter was given priority airspace access to support the police response.

Flight paths appeared to be running as normal later in the afternoon.
