Man shot at by police after armed standoff in Wellington suburb

A man was shot in the shoulder by police in Wellington this afternoon after allegedly threatening residents with a “large, bladed” weapon and barricading himself inside a home.

The incident prompted a major armed police response, including the use of pepper spray, tasers, and a police dog, before the man was taken into custody.

Police were called at around 12.35pm to Anne St in the suburb of Wadestown after a report of a man entering a house with a large, bladed weapon and attempting to steal a vehicle.

When confronted by the occupants, he allegedly began damaging the property, a police spokesperson said.

Officers arriving at the scene deployed pepper spray to subdue the man, who then retreated into a room and refused to come out.

Police say the man became increasingly violent and continued to pose a threat while still armed.

Pepper spray and tasers were used, but when the situation escalated further, a single shot was fired by a police officer.

The armed offenders squad and police negotiation team were called in, and the man was taken into custody with the assistance of a police dog at around 2.20pm.

Police said he was taken to hospital to receive treatment for a dog bite, where he will remain under police guard. He also sustained a “superficial injury” to his shoulder, believed to be as a result of the shot fired.

Wellington District Commander Superintendent Corrie Parnell said it was a “fast-moving situation” involving a violent offender.

“We are fortunate this incident was resolved with no injury to our staff or members of the public.”

Parnell said the victims of the initial burglary as well as staff involved would receive support.

A scene examination was underway and police said the public can expect an increased presence in the area.

The matter would be referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority, as is standard procedure when a firearm is discharged.

Charges were being considered and would follow in due course.
