Auckland music institution Marbecks has announced the closure of its physical store more than 90 years after it opened on Queen St.
In a post to Facebook, the record shop, which opened in 1934, said it would be closing the doors at its Queens Arcade location and moving to an online-only store.
“Marbecks will continue to operate online, offering our exceptional range of new releases and the extensive collections,” the statement read.
“The move to an online store marks the beginning of a new chapter for us, ensuring that you will continue to access the best in music, delivered straight to your door. We will also be only a call away for those who prefer to order by phone or check in for a chat.”
Plans were also underway for special pop-up events at festivals and music gatherings around the country to “keep the spirit of the store alive for those who love the in-person experience”, the announcement said.
A closing down sale would begin today.
Founded in 1934 by Alfie and Eileen Marbeck, the store became a beloved hub for music lovers, known for its deep catalogue of classical, jazz, and pop, and knowledgeable staff.
It remained in the Marbeck family for generations, expanded to become New Zealand’s largest music store, and survived major industry shifts and ownership changes.
In 2006, the family sold the business to The CD and DVD Store, which rebranded its 30 outlets under the Marbecks name. After the chain collapsed, the original store returned to family hands following a seven-year hiatus.
