A man has been critically injured in a suspected stabbing on Auckland’s North Shore this afternoon.
Police said a man was located with injuries on Birkenhead Ave by a member of the public just after 2pm.
Acting Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said an investigation is now underway to determine what happened.
“At this early stage we believe the man has sustained stab wounds and he has been taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.”
St John said it responded to the incident with one ambulance and two rapid response vehicles.
“One patient, in a critical condition, was transported to Auckland City Hospital.”
A witness told 1News that they saw a badly injured man lying on the side of the road on his back at around 2pm.
“An elderly lady stopped to help him, then a cop car pulled up.”
They said the situation was “scary” and that they had “never seen anything like it”.
“I hope somebody saw it happen or has seen something.”
Harrison said police would like to hear from the public who may have seen an incident unfold this afternoon.
“Anyone who may have witnessed something taking place at an address or on the street should contact us.
“We would also like to hear from anyone with information about a vehicle seen fleeing the scene a short time afterward.”
Part of Birkenhead Ave has been closed near the intersection with Onewa Rd, and Harrison said a scene examination would take place this afternoon.
“Our investigation is still in the early stages in determing exactly what has taken place in Birkenhead this afternoon.
“The public will see an increased presence of our staff in the area, and we appreciate the public’s understanding while our staff carry out their work at the scene.”
Auckland Transport said that a section of Birkenhead Ave, between Onewa Rd and Pupuke Rd was closed at around 2.50pm.
“Avoid this area or expect delays with diversions in place affecting all traffic, including bus services,” a spokesperson said.
North Shore councillor Richard Hills said it was “extremely upsetting” to hear about the stabbing.
“I hope the victim is okay, I know emergency services and medical staff will be doing everything they can to help him.”
He thanked those who came to the victim’s aid and tried to help.
“I cannot imagine how traumatic that was, please seek support if you need it.
“Please call 111 if you know or hear where the person or people responsible for this violence are right now.”
