Metallica rocks 55,000 fans at Eden Park, busts out Kiwi covers

Metallica surprised a packed Eden Park crowd when they busted out two classic Kiwi covers at their only New Zealand show last night.

Halfway into the show, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo played Six60’s Don’t Forget Your Roots and Split Enz’s I Got You for the 55,000 eager metal heads, many of who had travelled from around New Zealand for the show.

It’s become a tradition for the band to play local tracks at concerts – The Chats, Rose Tattoo and INXS were among the bands covered in Australia

The set as a whole was definitely well received, with the metal legends treating fans to a set running through some of their biggest hits, including Master of Puppets, Nothing Else Matters and usual set closer Enter Sandman.

One concertgoer said the show was “very, very impressive” and the crowd was “unbelievable”.

“The stage show was a different level, also the little things like all the doors and stairwells in the stadium had Metallica branding on them.

“For a country as small as us it was amazing to see how many hardcore fans there are.”

Nick Hill of Tātaki Auckland said it was a “fantastic show” with an incredible atmosphere.

“Events like that really do bring people out.”

It was the first time the multi-Grammy award winners had played in New Zealand since 2010, with Auckland’s hotels fully booked.

A scheduled 2019 concert was cancelled due to lead singer James Hetfield entering a rehab clinic for treatment.

The morning’s headlines in 90 seconds, including stalking bill passes through parliament, phone ban in class working, and Metallica deliver a Kiwi classic. (Source: Breakfast)
