National Give a Little Day aimed at boosting charities

Supporters, workplaces, charities and schools are preparing efforts to unite New Zealand for a day of generosity, with the nationwide Give a Little Day celebration set for Tuesday December 2.

Registered charities or schools donated to via Givealittle on the day will receive the full amount, with the crowdfunding site waiving the 5% platform fee it usually charges.

Givealittle chief executive Lythan Chapman said she recognised a growing need among communities.

“New Zealanders remain some of the most generous charitable givers in the world. We see that generosity every day. But we also see pressure on charities and schools,” she said.

“Give a Little Day is a moment to stand with the organisations that support our communities.”

Landmarks throughout the country including Auckland’s Sky Tower set to light up in the crowdfunding site’s teal and yellow colours, and various fundraising events planned or already up and running.

These include a 12kms of Christmas running challenge launched by Bay of Islands conservation charity Project Island Song and a North Canterbury high tea fundraiser for breast cancer charity Sweet Louise.

There will also be support in Christchurch for a One Mother to Another campaign preparing care packages for parents with sick kids, and a match giving campaign, also in Christchurch, supporting children and families affected by family and sexual violence.

Kiwis have been asked to get in on the action by planning or attending small activities for charities or schools they care about – making sure to make their donations on December 2 and to use #GiveaLittleDay online to spread the word.

A total of 365,000 donations worth more than $31 million were made via Givealittle last year.

“Give a Little Day exists because small acts have immense value,” Chapman said. “When many people give a little, the impact reaches every corner of the country.”

More information for charities, schools and supporters can be found on the Givealittle website.
