Nearly 500 lightning strikes in 3-hour period across North Island

MetService says thunderstorms are sparking along an active frontal band of rain as it quickly pushes northwards across the North Island this morning.

The forecaster observed 482 lightning strikes in the vicinity of the front during a three-hour window from 4am to 7am.

“These thunderstorms may produce brief heavy rain and strong wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h. A low risk associated with the front extends over Coromandel Peninsula and the eastern ranges of Bay of Plenty,” MetService said on its website.

In a post online, it said Auckland and Northland had been upgraded to a moderate risk of experiencing thunderstorms this morning.

There was also a moderate thunderstorm risk for coastal Buller.

There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms for Wairarapa and the northeastern coast of the South Island (north of Christchurch) this afternoon.

“Active thunderstorms can bring bursts of heavy rain and gusty winds. Please take care if out on the morning commute.”

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) warned yesterday of strong wind gusts that may impact the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

All lanes are currently open, however “extra care is currently required” for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles as the bridge faced strong wind gusts.

Speed restrictions were also in place.

“Please obey speed signs and maintain a safe following distance,” NZTA said.

In the South Island, road snowfall warnings were in effect for Arthur’s Pass (SH73), Crown Range Rd, Lewis Pass (SH7) and Milford Rd (SH94) into the afternoon.

The morning’s headlines in 90 seconds, including a man’s arrested over an attack on Winston Peters’ house, why hundreds of people might need to resit their driving test, and will the ‘Mushroom Murder’ case see duelling appeals? (Source: Breakfast)
