New measles case linked to Auckland Airport brings NZ total to 19

One new cases of measles has been reported – linked to Auckland Airport – bringing the total number of measles cases nationwide to 19.

Health NZ said the new case was confirmed late on Tuesday and was domestic.

Officials said the case was linked to Auckland Airport. The infected person was now isolating, with public health services in touch to provide advice and support.

“No other new cases of measles have been identified by public health at this time,” the statement from Health NZ said.

Locations of interest for the case were still being assessed, with an exposure event so far being identified at Auckland Airport.

The ministry website noted a “casual” exposure event on November 4 at Auckland International Airport from 2pm to 9.30pm and at the Domestic Terminal from 2pm to 3pm on the same day.

Rapid immunity checks were taking place for exposed staff, Health NZ said.

“Individuals travelling through international ports are routinely assessed for infectious diseases if they report feeling unwell and are provided with healthcare advice and support as needed,” the statement said.

One case removed from NZ’s tally

One earlier reported measles case was removed from the total, Health NZ added.

“While they were initially infectious in New Zealand, they have since returned overseas where they were diagnosed and will be officially counted as a case there.”

Symptoms included an illness that begins with high fever (over 38C); cough; runny nose; sore red eyes (conjunctivitis); and a rash, lasting up to one week beginning on the face and gradually spreading down the body to the arms and legs.

Anyone who developed symptoms should contact Healthline on 0800 611 116 or their usual healthcare provider.
