A person has died following a collision between a train and vehicle in Auckland this afternoon.
Police said the incident occurred at the level crossing on Maurice Rd in Penrose around 2pm.
“Sadly, despite medical assistance the sole occupant of the vehicle has died at the scene,” police said.
“No injuries have been reported from those aboard the train at this stage.
“Our thoughts are with those who are affected by this tragic event.”
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson told 1News two rapid response units were called to the scene around 2.01pm.
In a statement, Auckland Transport director – public transport and active modes, Stacey van der Putten, told 1News the car was struck by an AT train travelling on the Onehunga Line.
Barriers at the Maurice Rd level crossing “were down at the time and appeared to be functioning properly”, she said.
“The train driver immediately notified the Auckland Rail Operations Centre and emergency services responded promptly on the scene. The train driver is being supported by our rail operator, Auckland One Rail (AOR).”
Police are investigating the incident with support from AT and the Rail Operations Centre.
“Incidents like this are horrific for everyone involved and our thoughts go out to the people and their families impacted by this.”
Services on the Onehunga Line are suspended while police attend the scene.
Onehunga Line customers have been advised to find alternative travel arrangements.
A section of Maurice Rd, nearest to the intersection with Station Rd, is now closed.
Station Rd remains open, however delays are expected.
