Pleasure launch destroyed by fire on Hauraki Gulf, two rescued

Two boaties have been safely evacuated after their launch caught fire on Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf this morning.

Emergency service received multiple calls at around 8.15am to report a 11m launch on fire between Motukorea/Browns Island and Musick Point.

Police maritime unit Sergeant Jesse Jenden said Deodar III transported firefighters from Parnell to the burning boat.

“Unfortunately, the vessel was well engulfed in fire.”

Auckland ferry service SeaLink confirmed its vehicle ferry Island Navigator responded to the incident a maritime incident involving “a burning pleasure craft” around 8.30am.

“Our vessel master notified maritime authorities and diverted course to offer assistance and check for people on board,” a SeaLink spokesperson said in a statement.

“The Island Navigator arrived on scene with firefighting and rescue equipment prepared, however the police launch recovered two individuals from the boat’s dinghy, and no further assistance was required from our crew.

“We thank the authorities for their swift response.”

Coastguard Howick volunteers also transported firefighters from Howick to the incident.

“The two people on board safely evacuated to a tender,” a Coastguard spokesperson said.

Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) said firefighters extinguished the fire and left the scene at around 9.20am.

“No persons or injuries have been reported,” a FENZ spokesperson said.

The Auckland Harbourmaster said a team was currently at the site of the wreck clearing debris.
