Two people have been arrested overnight for allegedly stealing a series of number plates in New Lynn, Auckland.
Police were called to the scene at 3am on Friday morning, where the two people were said to have interfered with cars on Stock Street.
Waitematā West Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Kelly Farrant, said with the help of the police eagle helicopter they were able to track the suspects down.
“The Police Eagle helicopter responded and were able to direct our ground staff to the vehicle’s location, where it eventually came to a stop in Māngere.”
Police confirmed the vehicle was stolen and after searching it, numerous other number plates that had also been reported stolen were discovered.
A 26-year-old man is facing unlawful stealing of a vehicle as well as additional shoplifting charges. A 23-year-old woman was also arrested, with charges still being considered.
Inspector Farrant said she hopes the community will be comforted by the arrests.
“We know this sort of offending where people’s property is targeted can be incredibly invasive for our community.”
She also acknowledged the members of the public who reported the crimes, thanking them for contacting the police.
