The public have were asked to avoid a Napier suburb as police responded to reports of people fighting in the streets this afternoon.
In a statement just before 5pm, police said some streets in Maraenui were being cordoned off “as a precaution”.
“There is no threat to public safety at this time,” said a police spokesperson.
In an update this evening shortly before 8.30pm, police said officers were called to an address on Gilray Ave shortly after 2:30pm after receiving reports of a small group of people fighting in the street.
“An area was cordoned off after police received a report that a firearm was involved.
“At this time, police have been unable to substantiate those reports.”
The roads have since been reopened and police thanked members of the public for their patience.
