Police have today formally named a 77-year-old man who died of his injuries at a house near Northland’s Kaikohe last week.
He was Daniel Hepehi, also known as Danny Whiston.
Hepehi was found with critical injuries at a home on Waikerikeri Rd in Horeke in the early hours of May 22. He received medical attention but died at the scene.
A homicide probe was launched following his death.
Officers were sent to the property after speaking to a man who had arrived outside the Kaikohe Police Station around 8.30pm the previous day.
Police are now appealing for sightings of Hepehi on Wednesday, May 21.
Detective inspector Rhys Johnston said said police have confirmed Hapehi was grocery shopping in Kaikohe around 10.30am that day.
“We would like to hear from anyone who saw Mr Hepehi or interacted with him over this time to assist in the investigation.”
Police added it is aware Hepehi rode long distances on his bike around Horeke, Ōkaihau and Kaikohe.
Investigators are also appealing for sightings of a green and gold four-wheel drive SUV vehicle with the number plate LCP129.
“We are not seeking anyone in connection with the homicide, but we are doing everything we can to find out what happened,” he said.
“Additional police from other areas have joined the investigation.”
