Mike McRoberts has announced his first role after ending his news presenting career with the closure of Newshub.
The National Business Review (NBR) today announced the appointment of McRoberts as Te Ao Māori Editor, a role he said he was “really excited” about.
“It’s an opportunity to shape the narrative around key developments within the Māori economy and to ensure these stories receive the national attention they deserve.”
In this new role, he will develop content around the dynamics of the Māori economy and focus on stories of Māori communities.
He said finding his next step was all about the right fit.
“Working with an organisation and team whose mana is all about trust, independence, and integrity feels like the perfect environment to take my kete of experience and continue to grow.”
He adds: “The Māori expression, ‘ka mua, ka muri’ — looking back in order to move forward — perfectly encapsulates this new chapter. It’s about learning from the past to inform and enrich our future.”
NBR editor-in-chief-of-strategy Grant Walker said the Māori economy was an area they had been working in for years and that McRoberts’ appointment moved it “into our next phase”.
“Mike’s excitement and mana can only enhance our knowledge and understanding of what is set to become a $100 billion economy by 2030.”
McRoberts began his TV3 news reporting career in 2001, and in 2002 started presenting current affairs programme 60 Minutes.
By 2005, he was presenting the 6pm news bulletin with Hilary Barry.
In 2016, Barry left and McRoberts was then joined by Samantha Hayes.
Following the closure of Newshub on July 5, Stuff will be producing a 6pm news bulletin for Three after it reached an agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery.
The new 6pm show will be hosted solely by Samantha Hayes.
