Rockfall on SH59, drivers urged to use Transmission Gully

Drivers heading north out of Wellington on Friday and Saturday are being urged to use Transmission Gully rather than State Highway 59 where there has been a rockfall.

The slip occurred between Pukerua Bay and Paekākariki, just south of the Fisherman’s Table restaurant this morning.

NZTA said geotechnical experts would be investigating the site of a rockfall to check for the risk of further instability and debris falls.

“This work will be done later [Friday] evening once southbound traffic flows ease. They are currently peaking because of the southbound closure of State Highway 1 Transmission Gully for drainage work and repairs.”

NZTA said the work would require stop/go traffic management to be in place to allow southbound traffic to be diverted into the northbound lane and way from the rockfall site.

“Southbound traffic will have priority because of the State Highway 1 Transmission Gully southbound closure this weekend for drainage works and road repairs.”

Northbound motorists heading to the Kāpiti Coast were asked to avoid SH59 entirely this evening and stay on SH1 via Transmission Gully.

Further restrictions were also planned for Saturday morning, NZTA said.

From 6am, SH59 will be closed to northbound traffic between Plimmerton and the Fisherman’s Table while crews continue work at the slip site.

Only residents, local businesses, and emergency services will be allowed through with all other northbound travellers required to use SH1 Transmission Gully.
