A person has been left seriously injured following a crash between a train and a rubbish truck just north of Taranaki’s Stratford this morning.
Emergency services responded to the collision at the intersection of State Highway 3 and Radnor Rd shortly before 6.45am.
In a statement, KiwiRail’s chief operations officer Siva Sivapakkiam said a rubbish truck collided with a freight train heading northbound at the Radnor Rd level crossing.
“The train driver was shaken but uninjured and is receiving support,” he said.
Sivapakkiam said the line would remain closed until police gave clearance for it to re-open.
State Highway 3 at the intersection with Radnor Rd was closed but has since reopened.
However, speed restrictions are in place.
“We wish to thank motorists for their continued patience,” police said.
A St John Ambulance spokesperson said one person in a serious condition was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital by ambulance.
Stratford is about a 40 minute drive from New Plymouth.
