A Dunedin woman has come up with an idea for those who want a cool brew any time and anywhere they want.
The Keg Collective is the brainchild of Shaquille Spooner-Nixon, who has transitioned a horse float into a six-tap, six-keg trailer which pours liquid of all sorts.
She said the idea had been floating around in her head for a while.
“I was always wanting to make some sort of mobile business. At first, it was cafe, and then I thought, ‘oh, maybe a bar’. Then I decided, after working all week, who really wants to be working all weekend as well.
“I was just trying to think what I could make [that] is basically a drop-off, pick-up service that’s going to be a little bit different. Then seeing this kind of self-pour idea came to life and it kind of just flowed from there.”
She bought an old horse float in May and got to work.
That involved measuring it up, covering a wall at home with masking tape and getting the sizing exactly right.
“I had the idea in my head and then I actually built the bar just in my brother-in-law’s garage because he’s a builder and I had him, kind of, watch over what I was doing. I’m really impressed with how it’s come out, really.
“Once you start talking about your project, people are more interested, so I came across a guy in North East Valley who actually builds trailers. He let me into his workspace, so I could put the bar and the float, kind of, together … he was the one that I paid to do all of the welding work. ”
People could hire the trailer for any event, such as weddings, birthday parties or family gatherings, she said.
If the event was ticketed, they would need a liquor licence, but would not if tickets were not sold.
It was a dry hire in that she would only provide the trailer, not the alcohol, and it would be up to the hirer to arrange any licensing issues, if needed.
So far, she had spent about $15,000 on the operation.
It had six taps and six kegs, so six options could be offered. Kegs of up to 50 litres could be catered for.
There was also an ice box which would keep the drinks cold.
She was dreaming big and hoped that first trailer would lead to a fleet, she said.
As far as she knew, there was one similar venture overseas, but it was the first one in her neck of the woods.
