Sixteen people have been arrested after a convoy of dirt bike riders allegedly drove dangerously across Auckland yesterday.
Police said initial reports were made about the bikes at around 2.30pm in Ōtara, and more calls came as the bikes were ridden north into central Auckland, travelling around 70km through parts of the city.
Patrols were diverted to monitor the riders, including the Eagle helicopter and numerous ground units, said Counties Manukau District Prevention Manager Inspector Mark Chivers.
“It was very clear their behaviour was putting the wider community at risk, with bikes exceeding the speed limit, running red lights and riding dangerously.”
The group was seen breaking up into smaller groups, with police staff taking “swift action” once safe, he added.
Overall, 16 people have been arrested for a variety of driving offences.
A 33-year-old man man was also arrested for allegedly displaying gang insignia on his bike, Chivers said.
“As part of our overall response, 12 bikes were seized, along with two cars and one quad bike.
“It’s a pleasing outcome and, as we have shown in the past, we take this offending seriously.”
Police would continue to intervene and enforce the law with these groups, he said, adding there was “no doubt” the action taken prevented further risk and disruption.
“We are very aware of the danger and frustration their behaviour imposes on people who are just going about their day and using the roading network.
“People should not have to be subjected to the dangerous and selfish behaviour.”
