A taxi driver who had been stabbed “several times” has been taken to hospital after seeking help at a McDonald’s restaurant.
A 46-year-old Auckland woman has been charged over the incident, police said.
Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Baillie said: “About 10.30pm, a taxi driver arrived at a fast food restaurant on Memorial Avenue to seek help after being stabbed several times.
“The victim suffered critical injuries but is now [in a] serious but stable condition in hospital.”
The attack did not take place at the McDonald’s.
A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “The victim sought assistance from staff at the restaurant, and they rang emergency services.”
Baillie said: “About 15 minutes after police were called, the alleged offender was taken into custody at a nearby hotel.
“Cordons were in place overnight and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
“Police will have an ongoing presence in the area today while a scene examination is carried out, but we do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the public and are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.”
The woman has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court today, police said.
Anyone with information was asked to call 105.
A St John spokesperson confirmed the agency sent one operations manager, one rapid response unit and two road ambulances to the scene.
“We transported one person in a critical condition to hospital.”
