The co-owner of a popular Auckland café says his staff are “on edge” after the eatery was broken into for the fourth time in 10 days last night.
Nigel Cottle posted to Crave’s Facebook page this afternoon saying a “super heavy” safe has been stolen that staff thought was “unmoveable”.
“We are upset that we have to post these images from our CCTV of the 2 people who have broken into Crave for the 4th time in 10 days! Last night, they managed to take our super heavy safe that we thought was unmoveable.
“We try and operate off a high trust model, where we assume the best in people and take it on the chin when we are ripped off. We now don’t know how to stop this. We have fixed/ upgraded all our alarm, camera, and lock systems, but it isn’t enough.”
“Overall, over $25,000 worth of items and cash have been stolen in the 4 robberies so far.
“If you recognise any of the ppl, clothing, or shoes you see in the photos, please get in touch. The police have been very responsive and have been actively patrolling outside overnights, but it still isn’t enough,” the post continued.
“We can’t afford to hire an overnight security guard, but it might be the only thing we can do.
“Thanks to all of you who have expressed support. It has really made a difference. Our staff feel supported, and it has been a great reminder that people care.”
Speaking to 1News, Cottle said: “I’ve moved from disappointed to actually just angry, and also despair because we don’t know what to do to stop this.
“They [the thieves] seem to be coming in every second or third night and we’ve even had the idea of getting someone to sleep there over night but figured they may end up getting hurt.”
Cottle said apart from the police investigation, he thinks the best deterrent for the thieves is “plastering their faces all over social media”.
He added that despite what’s happened, there have been some silver linings for the business. “We’ve really felt the gratitude of the neighbourhood, people have shown they care and that they’re concerned.”
Police told 1News it is in the early stages of investigating the burglaries.
Auckland City West Area Commander Inspector Alisse Robertson said the four incidents happened between May 13 and 24.
“Police have conducted a scene examination and are working to determine a clear picture of what has occurred, and to identify any alleged offenders.
“We would encourage anyone with information on these incidents to phone Police on 105 quoting file number 240524/6357.”
Cottle said Crave will be open over the weekend and operating business as usual.
