‘Sunscreen up’ for warm weekend weather – MetService

Roll out the barbecue and slap on some sunscreen — MetService is forecasting a warm and sunny weekend for most of the country.

The forecaster said warm temperatures were expected in both the North and South Islands, with Christchurch forecast to get close to 30C today.

Areas of the North Island, including Auckland, were expected to hit highs of around 24C.

Speaking to Breakfast, MetService meteorologist Heather Keats said most places were in for “a really lovely weekend”, but cautioned some areas could still feel the tail-end of wet weather.

“So most places are going to stay dry today and definitely warm. But we do still have a couple of watches in place for the slow moving front over the southwest of the South Island, not impacting too many overly populated areas,” she said.

Asked about whether the nights would remain muggy, Keats said that wouldn’t last much longer.

“This week we have had very wet and a very moist, muggy, northwest kind of air mass coming down from the tropics.

“But actually that is replaced by a southerly today, coming up from the South Island.”

She said this could bring “confusing” weather, particularly for Christchurch.

“So 29C today, then that southerly moves through. And then by Monday, their high is only 15C. So today is going to be a very warm day, warm night. Then over the weekend, we start to see more typical average type temperatures,” she said.

Keats said in Hamilton, it would be “perfect cricket weather” for the Black Caps’ 3rd ODI match of the series against the West Indies on Saturday.

“It’s fine skies. Definitely want to sunscreen up,” she laughed.

Meanwhile, a heavy rain watch remained in effect for Fiordland about and north of Milford Sound and Westland south of Jackson Bay until 8pm today.
