A teenager who was critically injured during a serious crash in Kumeū last month has died in hospital from his injuries.
An investigation has been underway since June 27, when a car that had earlier failed to stop for police crashed into a house on Coatesville-Riverhead Highway shortly after 8pm.
Four teenagers were hospitalised at the time, with the conditions of three stabilising in recent days. One teenage had been in critical condition in Auckland City Hospital.
Waitematā District Commander Superintendent Naila Hassan said “sadly, the teenage male succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night and passed away in hospital”.
“This is a tragic development for everyone concerned on top of an incident that has had devastating impacts for these young people,” she said.
“The boy’s next-of-kin has been advising wider family members overnight, and we are ensuring there is support in place for them.”
Hassan said investigations would continue into the crash.
“We are continuing to support our staff who responded courageously on Friday night, and were confronted with a very traumatic scene.
“It’s important we allow a thorough investigation to be carried out and we expect this may take some time to complete.”
The Independent Police Conduct Authority has also been informed of the incident as part of this process.
