Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters says a “disgusting coward” has smashed a window in a “truly gutless attack” at his home in Auckland this evening.
Peters said on X that he wasn’t home at the time but his partner and a guest were present.
Glass shattered “all over” Peters’ dog in the attack, he said, and a sign was left on the front door.
Officers were called to a house around 5.40pm following a report of wilful damage, a police spokesperson confirmed to 1News.
“The offender had left the scene, and was not immediately able to be located. Inquiries are ongoing.”
On Thursday, protesters gathered outside the minister’s home in support of those on the Global Sumud Flotilla.
A boat had been attempting to deliver aid to Gaza when it was intercepted by Israeli forces off the coast of the Palestinian territory.
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and three New Zealanders were among those detained.
Peters said today’s incident “is the type of violent hate-filled behaviour we warned about in the past few days about the radical left”.
“When we have protesters, political bloggers, and MPs alike encouraging this behaviour, posting politician’s home addresses online, and acting with pure ignorance and extremism, this is the result.
“This is the slippery slope that the left has been on the pathway of radicalisation for some time.”
The NZ First leader said New Zealanders “need to be deeply concerned about where our country is going and see who are the perpetrators of this divisive and violent behaviour”.
“All of New Zealand needs to be deeply concerned.”
A 1News reporter at the scene said there were several police vehicles outside the house, and a forensic examination was underway.
