The Rotterdam-Rijnmond Safety Region said the incident occurred at around 11:10 a.m. on the iconic Erasmus Bridge, which has since been closed to traffic.

Firefighters, paramedics, and police officers attended the scene alongside an air ambulance. Seven people were taken to hospital for treatment, with one person seriously injured, officials said. Paramedics were able to attend to the rest of the injuries at the scene.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

Video footage circulating on social media shows the moment the two trams collided. One tram can be seen hurtling into another stationary railcar.

In a statement shared on its website, transport company RET, which operates trams in Rotterdam, said: “We have seen the footage and are deeply shocked. Our thoughts are with the victims and the passengers who were on board”.

“All our attention is focused on the victims, the staff involved and the passengers,” it continued, adding that it would “do everything we can to establish how this could have happened.”
