TVNZ’s local drama, comedy and factual series programmes dominated at the New Zealand Screen Awards, with the broadcaster’s shows and staff amassing 19 prizes.
The second season of crime drama The Gone claimed four prestigious awards – Best Drama Series, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Original Score.
The series’ success follows that of the show’s first season, which claimed five awards at the 2023 New Zealand Television Awards.
Stephen Lovatt was named Best Actor in a Series for his work on Shortland Street
Taskmaster New Zealand (season 5), hosted by Jeremy Wells, was crowned Best Entertainment Programme.
Moving Houses won Best Factual Series, while The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes won the Best Reality category.
Grit & Glory was named Best Sports Programme, and First Place was named Best Children’s Programme.
Further recognition went to TVNZ drama titles, with The Brokenwood Mysteries awarded Best Makeup Design and Best Script, A Remarkable Place To Die was credited with Best Cinematography and Under The Vines (season 3) took home Best Production Design
My Life Is Murder was awarded Best Costume Design.
The awards, held at Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre on Friday night, recognise excellence in the TV and film industry.
In total, TVNZ won 19 of the 56 categories.
The broadcaster’s journalists dominated the news categories, including plaudits for its coverage of the Māori King’s tangi.
John Campbell was named Best Presenter: News and Current Affairs and Indira Stewart was crowned Reporter of the Year.
Te Karere host Scotty Morrison won the coveted Screen Personality of the Year award – the only honour that is judged by public voting.
1News won the Best News Coverage award for its reporting on the Māori King Tuheitia’s tangi last year, featuring a range of live broadcasts from Tūrangawaewae Marae in the town of Ngāruawāhia.
