Police are seeking the public’s help after a woman was found dead in Wellington Harbour yesterday morning.
The woman, who is believed to be of NZ European heritage and aged between 60 and 70, was found in the water off Māhina Bay near Eastbourne at around 8am.
She was wearing black-coloured active wear including a distinctive black long-sleeved hooded sweatshirt that had an image of a large white rose on the front.
In a statement this afternoon, police said that while investigators don’t know how the woman ended up in the harbour, it’s believed she may have been walking in the York Bay area earlier that morning.
Police are now asking anyone who was in the area between 6am and 8am on Sunday and may have observed something to come forward.
“We would like to ask our community to check on family or friends who they know walk in the Eastbourne/York Bay area and who may have been walking there on Sunday morning,” Detective Inspector Haley Ryan said.
“Please contact police if they are unaccounted for.
“The woman is believed to be NZ European aged between 60 – 70 years old, however we’re keeping an open mind and are interested in hearing from anyone whose adult female friend or relative is recently unaccounted for in the Wellington area.”
Those with information are being asked to call 105.
