Police in Hawke’s Bay who apprehended a group of five youths in an alleged stolen vehicle were shocked to discover the set of road spikes they had deployed were taken from the scene by a member of the public.
Senior Sergeant Craig Vining said Hawke’s Bay police located the allegedly stolen blue Toyota Aqua hatchback travelling in Otane around 11.30am on Sunday.
Vining said officers were quickly able to spike the car at the intersection of Higginson St and State Highway 2.
“Due to the vehicle driving at excessive speed, police did not pursue and later located the vehicle abandoned in a field on Porangahau Road.”
Five youths were found nearby and referred to Youth Aid Services.
“Unfortunately, the set of road spikes were uplifted by a member of the public before they could be recovered from the roadside in Otane.”
Vining said anyone with information on the road spikes is being urged to contact police on 105 or through Crime Stoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
