The European Parliament on Tuesday approved two major reforms to EU driving rules — one ensuring that bans on reckless drivers apply across all member states, the other introducing digital licences and updated testing standards. One person has died after failing to return from a crayfishing trip today in Hawke’s Bay.Police were contacted at 1.40pm after two people did not return from their trip this morning.Coastguard Hawke’s Bay was then deployed, and found one person in the water at 3.10pm.This person was transported back to shore by Coastguard Rescue, where they were checked over by ambulance staff, police said.The second person was located in the water a short time later but was unresponsive. Police said they were unable to be revived.The death would be referred to the Coroner, police said.

Four-year-old Nia Lohchab was described as an energetic young girl who was a fast runner for her age. Like many children, Nia could often be found jumping on the trampoline. She had not yet learnt to swim, but she enjoyed playing in water.But just three days before her fifth birthday, her life was tragically cut short.The pre-schooler drowned at Tauranga’s Memorial Park in 2023.The findings of a coronial inquriy into Nia’s death are now able to be published.Coroner Matthew Bates concluded Nia’s cause of death was accidental drowning.
