Laptops and liquids are now allowed to be stored in carry-on bags during international security screening from today at Auckland Airport, thanks to the use of a new technology.
Announcing the change, Transport Minister Simeon Brown said it will create a more “efficient and seamless travel experience” and will eventually be rolled out to more screening locations across the country.
“This is a great example of innovative technology being used to reduce barriers and deliver better outcomes for New Zealanders. Maintaining strong security measures at our airports is critical, and this technology ensures this.”
The new computed tomography (CT) scanning machines will be used at Auckland Airport’s international screening points to enhance security capabilities.
Brown said the machines will roll out at domestic airports across the country between now and December, reducing pressure on aviation security lines and “enabling travellers get to their gates faster”.
The CT scanners create 3D images in real-time, allowing security staff to better assess the contents of bags.
There is no change to the 100ml volume limit of liquids, aerosols and gels carried on international flights.
International travellers leaving Wellington and Christchurch have been able to leave laptops and liquids in carry-on since late last year.
